Approximately 120 acres of Boone Hall Plantation is used to grow a wide variety of fresh local produce under the designation of Boone Hall Farms. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture has stated that the variety of crops grown at Boone Hall Farms is as diverse as anywhere in the state.
“While there are larger farms in South Carolina, the variety grown here packs a powerful punch,” explained Rick Benthall, Boone Hall’s director of marketing.
Nestled among the rich history of Boone Hall Farms lies Willie’s Roadside Market: a haven for fresh, local produce and a delightful immersion into the Lowcountry’s agricultural bounty. Named after the late Boone Hall Plantation owner Willie McRae, the market stands as a testament to his dedication to sustainable farming practices and ongoing commitment to bolstering the local community.
“Because of his roots to the land, Willie had a special place in his heart for the farm,” said Benthall. “He was committed to growing some of the finest produce available in the Lowcountry, but also wanted people to be able to see firsthand how that produce is grown instead of thinking it just comes from grocery store shelves. Under his guidance, education programs, u-pick operations and special events were introduced that allow people of all ages to come and learn while also experiencing some good ole wholesome family fun on the farm. Our staff today is committed to continuing that legacy,” added Benthall.
Willie’s Roadside Market blends rustic charm with coastal flavors. Vibrant displays of seasonal fruits and vegetables overflow from wooden crates and tables, while friendly vendors and enthusiastic shoppers mingle, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The true magic of Willie’s Roadside Market lies in its commitment to “farm-to-table” freshness. “Boone Hall Farms produce is picked fresh daily in season and is often available at Willie’s on the same day because it comes from local fields, not from across the country. This market has become a go-to favorite for locals and also for visitors to the area who want to add some freshness to their meals,” said Benthall. Additionally, local artisans showcase a variety of unique offerings, creating a diverse marketplace.
Boone Hall Farms itself cultivates a vast majority of the produce sold here allowing visitors to choose from top-quality fruits and vegetables at the peak of their season. Boone Hall Farms Manager Erik Hernandez oversees what is grown on the farm and sold at the market. He and Willie had a special bond.
“Willie McRae taught me everything I know about farming,” said Hernandez. “He was my mentor, but was also like a father to me, who taught me a lot about life.”
“Willie’s Roadside Market is the showcase business that serves as the gateway to Boone Hall Farms. The facility is establishing its place as one of the premier local open-air markets in the state that is befitting of its namesake,” stated Benthall.
