In small communities like Isle of Palms, the concept of community isn’t just a collection of individuals living in the same geographical area. It’s a tapestry of shared experiences, mutual aid and collective resilience. This sense of solidarity is especially palpable in times of crisis when the community pulls together to support one another.
A poignant illustration of this community spirit is the recent, heartrending loss of Beau Hammond, a beloved local figure whose sudden departure has left our island family in mourning.
The tragic events unfolded on a serene Sunday, March 17 when Jane Hammond, Beau’s wife, was viciously mauled by a neighbor’s Saint Bernard. The attack was severe, requiring Jane to be admitted to MUSC for multiple surgeries to mend the extensive damage inflicted by the dog, considerably larger in size and strength than her. Beau, deeply shaken, visited Jane at the hospital that day, a visit that, unbeknownst to either at that moment, would be the last time they would see each other. Later that evening, overwhelmed by distress, Beau suffered a fatal heart attack.
Originally from Simpsonville, Beau’s adventurous spirit led him to Key West, where he began his career as a charter captain, navigating boats from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Ocean and anywhere in between. His profound love for Key West drew him and Jane back to the island to marry, surrounded by their Isle of Palms friends and family in a celebration that perfectly captured the essence of their shared happiness. Beau’s knowledge of maritime conditions was unparalleled — whether it was the exact height of the current tide or the strength of the winds, he knew it all.
Beau’s transition to island life saw him becoming a fixture at The Dinghy, our local bar styled after the quintessential dives of Key West, where he felt particularly at home. At the “locals’ corner” of the bar, Beau told stories of his nautical adventures, the joke of the day or befriended a tourist visiting for the first time. His voice was a familiar, raspy beacon that always filled the room. This captivating sound would carry throughout the bar and draw people in, gathering around to listen as Beau unraveled his rich, vibrant tales from both local and afar.
“The Dinghy is more than a bar or even a community. It created the most amazing family many of us could have ever hoped for. It may be a dysfunctional family at times, but it is a very special group of people who care for each other greatly,” remarked a local friend.
Indeed, Beau’s presence enriched those around him and his customary farewell, “You know what I love about you? Everything!” became a heartfelt reminder of his endearing persona. His absence has left an irreplaceable void, especially at his usual spot at The Dinghy.
Local musicians throughout the island would often welcome Beau onto the stage. His distinguished voice and spirited performances were always a highlight, resonating throughout the space and entertaining those in attendance.
Beau’s legacy extended beyond storytelling and singing. He was a man who turned acquaintances into family. Every Thanksgiving, Beau and Jane opened their home to the community, hosting a feast centered around what Beau humorously called his “saltwater turkey” — a sizable red snapper prepared in uniquely ‘Beau’ fashion. His culinary skills were legendary; not only did he delight in cooking, but he also crafted all-natural dog treats distributed across the island and honed his talents as a pastry chef, much to the delight of locals.
Beau’s story is a testament to the profound bonds that define our community. As we remember him, we are reminded of the strength and love that make Isle of Palms not just a place to live but a place to belong. His memory continues to inspire and unite us, proving that even in the darkest times, the spirit of community shines the brightest.
In honor of Beau, the community has rallied to support Jane through her recovery. The local’s annual golf tournament has been aptly renamed the “Beau Hammond Classic,” scheduled for July 2 at Patriots Point Golf Course. All proceeds from the event will aid in offsetting Jane’s ongoing medical expenses.
