Charleston County Parks, PalmettoPride and the city, along with 40 or so volunteers, combined their efforts to clean up the beach following the July 4 holiday. Meanwhile, during the Lunch Buddies program at Sullivan’s Island Elementary School, where two-thirds of the students live in IOP, officers eat lunch with the students, read them stories and let them take an up-close look at their police cruisers. Several Police Department programs cement the solid relationship between the people who live in IOP and the men and women tasked with protecting them. For example, the Community Relations team of Detective Louise Hardy and Officer Thomas Molino has established “Coffee with a Cop.” Once a quarter, the community is invited to hang out with police officers at a local restaurant. “It’s very important for us to get involved with the community,” Usry commented. The Community Relations team came up with another Interim Chief Kim Usry usually starts her day by taking a drive around the island.
