And every now and then, on especially hot and muggy summer days, you might find an IOP policemen handing out freeze pops to kids. Though they are few and far between in IOP, every time there is a crime on the island, there’s also a police officer who serves as a victim’s advocate. The 21 officers who serve under Usry play a key role in nurturing the relationship between the Police Department and the residents of Isle of Palms, and the chief does her part as well. Almost every morning, she starts her day by taking a drive around the island. About once a month or so, she allows a local resident to ride along with her for a few hours. “If you know your community, they’ll tell you what’s going on,” said Usry. “I love what I do,” she added. “It’s an awesome job.” “We want to show them that we’re the good guys and that we’re here for them,” Usry said.
