campaign, Cable and Iowa-born Max Capper
helped assemble a group of like-minded islanders
to run against the incumbent slate of Democrats.
“We were definitely mavericks,” Cable
recalled. “Everything was Democrat. Salvatore
Sotille was mayor, and, in order to maintain
control, they had a rule that you had to run a
full slate in order to compete. You couldn’t run
just one person. You had to have a mayor and
eight council people. And with a novice outfit,
we just had a hell of a time doing that. I like to
say we had to run the town drunk in order to get
a full slate. And we did! His first name was Bill –
I won’t give you his last name.”
Somehow, the cobbled-together GOP ticket
managed to carry the day. Capper was elected
mayor, and Cable (and Bill) became town
councilmen.
“Hell – we won it,” Cable said, still with a bit
of wonder in his voice. “We won everything!”
Cable went on to spend 13 years on the Town
Council as an ardent supporter of building the
Clay Cable spent 13 years on the Isle of Palms Town Council and served as
mayor twice. He left office in 1985.
