Isle of Palms Winter-Spring 2018-19

5 www.IsleOfPalmsMagazine.com | www.ILoveIOP.com | www.IOPmag.com T his is what I call our locals’ edition. The winter months offer a peace like no other time of the year. Our islands are really our islands. Don’t get me wrong, year-round living on these sister islands is a blessing that we should always treasure. But this time of year, you can leave and return home without worrying about traffic. You can visit your favorite restaurant or watering hole without waiting in line. Our Managing Editor, Helen Harris, and I always enjoy discussing ideas for each issue of Isle of Palms Magazine and Sullivan’s Island Magazine. One of the articles we enjoyed bringing you is our interview with newly elected U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham; Sullivan’s Island Mayor Pat O’Neil and Council Member Rita Langley; Mount Pleasant Council Member Jim Owens; and Isle of Palms Mayor Jimmy Carroll. I remember Jimmy giving me the heads-up about the momentum Cunningham was gathering long before he was voted into the House of Representatives. Jimmy said, “Bill, you need to interview Joe Cunningham. He will fight for no offshore drilling.” With strong conviction he said, “He has a good chance of being elected.” Well, Jimmy was right. We were in the middle of getting ready to send the Isle of Palms/Sullivan’s Island Magazine to the printer. Our publishing team is flexible and creative. They understood our readers would like to hear from our newly-elected representative. So we made room for Brian Sherman’s interviews. Cunningham needed a lot of passion in his beliefs to win. And we are honored to tell the story of another passionate person. Sarah Sanders has lived on Goat Island since 1969 and worked as an educator at Moultrie High School and Moultrie Middle School for 33 years. She is an amazing person and artist. Colin McCandless’ article is a must-read. Can you imagine paddling your canoe across the Intracoastal Waterway every morning to teach your children? You go, Sarah! Among the articles I find rewarding are “We Were Sullivan’s Island” and “We Are Sullivan’s Island.” Anne Shuler Toole spearheads that series. We alternate these features every other issue – one issue in Isle of Palms Magazine and next issue in Sullivan’s Island Magazine . You can find Anne and photographer Jess Wood’s work on the Sullivan’s Island side, pages 17 through 23. If you take a moment to read these articles, they will take you back in time. I love these sister islands and what this magazine is all about. Eve Gentieu has this same kind of love. She visited Charleston first in 1972 and later attended the College of Charleston. After running marathons, traveling around the world with her Navy husband and later joining a Turtle Team, she is now giving Mother Nature a helping hand. Another must-read by Harris – “An Angel of the Island.” Before I leave, I’m excited to let you in on our “Best of the Islands” voting. We know our readers (tourists or locals) have favorites: restaurants, builders, repair people, teachers or maybe a best place to access the beach, ride your golf cart or take an out-of-town guest. Now you can spread some love. Tell us your favorite when, where, who and places in Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island. Just click on www.BestOfIOP.com. Enjoy, Bill Macchio Publisher@IsleOfPalmsMagazine.com [ Publisher’s Note ] Newly-elected U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham.
