Long Jr. “Nevertheless, J.C. was quick to tell you that it was the practice of law that was always dearest to his heart.” A memorial tribute to Long, prepared by his great-nephew for reading at the annual meeting of the Charleston County Bar Association after Long’s death in 1984, described his courtroom prowess: “J.C. was often able to have the jury, the audience, the judge and even himself in tears during his famous and highly emotional arguments, which often drew hundreds of spectators to the courtroom.” For the final 10 years of his life, Long was confined to a wheelchair, suffering from back trouble. “I don’t say I’m the happiest man in the world,” he said in an interview at his residence in Mount Pleasant before his death. “But I could not be any happier.” Thomas R. Waring, who wrote this article for East Cooper Magazine in 1985, was a ninth- generation Charlestonian whose name was associated with the major daily newspapers in Charleston for more than half a century. He began his career in journalism in the 1920s as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune. He returned to Charleston in 1931 as the city editor of the News and Courier and was later managing editor of the Evening Post. Waring passed away March 8, 1993.
