28 www.IsleOfPalmsMagazine.com | www.ILoveIOP.com | www.IOPmag.com V acationers and tourists from all over the world hoping to discover the best vacation spots routinely find what they are seeking in the Holy City and the surrounding area. What is it about Isle of Palms that differentiates it from any of the other beaches around Charleston? “It’s family friendly. The beaches are extremely clean. And, it’s a beach that has the best of both worlds: You can spend the day at the beach, and you are in close proximity to good restaurants and events,” said Emily Watson, director of vacation rentals at Dunes Properties. She explained that other beaches in the area have one or the other of the mentioned qualities, but Isle of Palms has unearthed a symmetry between all of these desirable features. Valerie Clagett, marketing manager of Island Realty, reinforced this theory with her own assertion on the uniqueness of Isle of Palms: “I think that not just the family friendly, but dog and pet friendly atmosphere, really sets it apart. … Also, I have found that, due to the location, there aren’t the same issues with traffic on Isle of Palms.” However, there’s something even less tangible and more sensational to the draw of Isle of Palms. Clagett discerned, despite the influx of tourism and boom in development, “Isle of Palms is one of those rare beaches that has stayed residential and not become too commercialized.” Perhaps by this point you’re thinking what thousands before you have, “I want to visit Isle of Palms.” Anyone can visit, but, with the help of some insider and local advice supplied by Watson and Clagett, you will be able to optimize your trip. What are some can’t-miss opportunities for a visitor of Isle of Palms? Clagett : Dine at some of the great restaurants downtown and at the marina. I also recommend an eco- tour and a Jet Ski safari that takes you on a marsh tour. Watson : The Isle of Palms Farmers’ Market is amazing! The local produce and food are definitely worth experiencing. We’re surrounded by history, so I would certainly recommend any of the historical tours or exhibitions. What is your favorite restaurant or meal to start your day on Isle of Palms? Clagett : Brunch at Acme Lowcountry Kitchen is an excellent way to start your day. It’s a charming spot to eat right on the island. Watson : The Refuge is easily my favorite coffee shop. I can’t think of a better place to start your day when staying on Isle of Palms. Isle of Palms A Destination for All Demographics By Mitchell Watford
