He considers himself lucky to have grown up in a quintessential beach-side town and is full of stories from the island’s sleepy past. “It was the end of civilization at the time. We went out and played tag and kick the can. …When we started getting older, we’d surf and go to beach bars,” he reminisced. “When we were 14 years old, we’d load up the jon boats with shotguns and camp on the islands. It was a great time and a great place.” He lived most of his life on the island, and following a divorce, Finch raised his two children here as a single dad, crediting the island’s community for helping raise his kids while he ran boats for a living. “Growing up, it was a lifestyle I loved, and I would have done anything for my children to have the same,” he said. Finch and his current wife, Lorie, moved off the island almost three years ago, relocating to Huger. Finch still captains boats and enjoys spending time with his children, grandchildren and two Yorkies. “It’s no secret the island and the people have changed a lot over the years, but there will always be a place in my heart for this island, and it will always be home to me.” We Are Isle of Palms Photo by Jess Wood.
