A fter visiting a recent Town Council meeting, I realized how hard the Isle Of Palms City Council works. It was obvious that blending island residents’ lives with the influx of visitors experiencing the joy of the beach is always on the agenda in one form or another. It’s intriguing to watch. I want to say it’s a love/hate relationship, but it’s really much more than that. I believe – though I’m sure some will disagree – that, for the most part, Isle of Palms residents see how sharing their island not only enriches the visitors’ lives but their lives as well. They know the island is providing an experience that will live on for many people. At this particular Town Council meeting, there were a number of pending subjects on the agenda, the main issue being parking. Of course, parking is a big issue in every growing town or vacation destination. Naturally, the explosion of island visitors during the summer months was another part of the discussion. The dialogue about parking boat trailers along Waterway Boulevard was certainly important. What struck me most was when all the Council members got on the same page when the prevailing theme became the safety of visitors and residents. Speaking of safety and managing the island, as I sat watching the Council, my thoughts kept gravitating toward two people in the room: Town Administrator Linda Tucker and Police Chief Thomas E. Buckhannon III. After 17 years, Linda will be retiring. Meanwhile, Chief Buckhannon has been part of an island legacy. His father was the chief before he took over the role. Now he is retiring as well. The passion, talent and knowledge for the island that these two shared will be sadly missed. The Isle of Palms Magazine staff wishes them well and appreciates the professionalism and hospitality they have always extended to us. We hope by reading Isle of Palms Magazine and Sullivan’s Island Magazine you’ll get a sense of the people, events and history that made these islands what they are today. If you’re a visitor, we hope you will enjoy yourself and respect these islands as if you lived here. We are proud to publish the photo of Mike and Toni Sieriej’s grandchildren on our Isle of Palms Magazine front cover. The Sieriej family has been coming as guests of Island Realty for years and submitted this heartfelt photo. We thank them, their grandchildren and Island Realty for putting us in touch with their guests. Enjoy, Bill Macchio [email protected] [ From the Publisher ] Summer Days WhatMakesIOPSpecial?
