She fondly remembers the first day the trolley ran. Though her family didn’t have much money, her mother would often cook a meal, and they would ride the trolley to Isle of Palms for a picnic and to go swimming. “It was a beautiful place, not like that thing that is out there now. It had a beautiful dance floor, said to be the most beautiful in the country. The Marine band often played there for dances. It was so nice,” she said. CAPTAINWILLIAM C. MAGWOOD SR. Born Feb. 15, 1899 Magwood was born on Capers Island, growing up with hunting, fishing and oystering in his blood. In his words, “I grew up with my feet in saltwater, and I’ve never really been happy when I was away from it.” Magwood hunted deer and wild and tame hogs, and trapped raccoons to sell their pelts. His mother grew vegetables in a 6-acre field, and they more or less lived off the land. He remembers winters being quite lonely, but, in the summertime, people would come there to fish. The strand, he said, used to run out so far that it nearly closed up the inlet, with only a 200- or 300-foot swim to Dewees Island.
