Isle Of Palms Magazine Summer/Fall 2018
20 www.IsleOfPalmsMagazine.com | www.ILoveIOP.com | www.IOPmag.com I f you ever wanted to hear a tale about life on the Isle of Palms, Ricky Myatt probably has one up your alley. His storied résumé runs the gamut from favorite Isle of Palms mailman for a quarter century to owner of Front Beach dive bar Malibu East, which was washed away by Hurricane Hugo. He might tell you about being the lead guitarist in a band he and a friend named “Free Beer Tonight,” which, he chuckled, “was a one-hit-wonder once bar patrons realized they weren’t getting drinks on the house,” or Deputy Dog, his beer-drinking yellow lab who was known to run up tabs in Myatt’s name along Front Beach. Perhaps he’d mention how he and his friends started volleyball at the Windjammer. A husband and father, he has been part of the fabric of this community since moving here from Charleston in 1978. With fond memories of playing stickball as a child, Myatt patented Half Rubber and now markets it to baseball coaches around the country as a batting-practice tool. He also coaches for Unified Sports, a sports program for children with special needs. Retired and loving life, he has no plans to leave. “For 25 years, I worked on the island and didn’t leave. I’ve been retired for 15 years. I live on the island and drive a golf cart. I don’t leave the island; I swear I’ve got it made,” he mused. . . .I .
