Isle Of Palms Magazine Summer/Fall 2018
19 www.IsleOfPalmsMagazine.com | www.ILoveIOP.com | www.IOPmag.com T he view from the crest of the Isle of Palms Connector has never lost its allure. A strip of lush trees and rooftops stretching to the north and south, and ahead an endless expanse of two shades of blue: ocean and sky, occasionally dotted along their border by small specks of giant ships. Straight white wakes of boats in the Intracoastal below, the descent to the island always holds the promise of an adventure to come. Seven miles long and only two miles across at their widest point, these 4 square miles of land and 1 square mile of water that make up the Isle of Palms mean a lot of things to a lot of people. For some, it’s home. For others, it’s home away from home or where childhood was or where retirement will hopefully be. For me, it’s been friends, piano lessons, first jobs, after-school beach walks, live music and now tidal pools and early-morning surf with my own family. For many thousands more, it’s vacations, marriages, celebrations or an escape from reality. No matter the reason, we all hold this place close to our heart. The island’s population ebbs and flows like the tide, depending on the season and the influx of summer rentals, beach-goers and snowbirds, but there are members of this community who embody everything “Isle of Palms” and who have helped shape it into a better place for everyone – residents and visitors alike. I am honored to present the first installment of this new recurring feature, shedding some light in this and each upcoming edition on a few people who are indeed “Isle of Palms.” We Are Isle of Palms BY ANNE SHULER TOOLE .I l f l i . | .I I . | .I .
