Butfiloski and his team noticed a marsh hawk perched above where they had let the mink out, and the hawk picked up the animal briefly but didn’t get too far. … initially. However, after Butfiloski and his team left the site, a call from a Dewees Island naturalist confirmed the mother mink’s fate at the talons of the hawk. This shocking event left four or five mink young alone in a PVC tube, so the DNR team picked them back up and made arrangements with a rehabilitator who had done some work with minks before. Ultimately, one mink was released back into the Dewees Island waters. Handling wild animals of any kind always comes with uncertainty, but having a team of educated, responsive and caring professionals on hand to make sure any outlier is addressed with care is a must. And Butfiloski and his team have certainly done that throughout the Furbearer Project, which has spawned nothing but a positive trend in population after the reintroduction along the coast north of Charleston.
