www.beachsidevacations.com | 43 1. WATCHING THE SUNSET FROM THE TIP OF SULLIVAN’S ISLAND . Parking next to Fort Moultrie at station 12, offers easy access to the beach overlooking the majestic Charleston Harbor. Fort Sumter appears to be only a stone throw away, and the Church steeples of Charleston reflect the setting sun each evening. 2. WALKING/RUNNING/BIKING THE ARTHUR RAVENEL BRIDGE . First off...a little bit about the bridge itself. The bridge has a main span of 1,546 feet (471m), the third longest among cable-stayed bridges in the Western Hemisphere. The total length of the structure is about 2.7 miles (4.3 km) each way. To park, pull into the Patriots Point Naval Complex and look for the signs to the Mount Pleasant Pier. Parking is free. The views from the bridge are amazing and, even on the hottest days, there is typically a nice breeze. 3. BARRIER ISLAND ECO TOURS LOCATED AT THE ISLE OF PALMS MARINA. Where most visitors choose the Island for the beautiful beaches, the true magic of the Lowcountry are the tidal marshes that separate it from the mainland. The folks at Barrier Island Eco Tours do a fabulous job exploring the salt marshes that eventually lead you out to Capers Island and the famous “bone-yard” beach. Each trip is an adventure, even for the locals. 843.886.5000. 4. THE OBSTINATE DAUGHTER ON SULLIVAN’S ISLAND IS A CAN’T MISS FOR LUNCH OR DINNER! Their name is a homage to the rich Revolutionary War history of Sullivan’s Island. Favorite items include the Geechie Frites, Obstinate Flatbread with Butterbean Puree, the Pappardelle or one of the many daily specials. After dinner, a can’t miss is to go down to Beardcat’s Sweet Shop, which is below the restaurant, for gelato and a walk in the park. Reservations for dinner are a must: 843.416.5020.
