A true native son, Stephen Sottile grew up exploring the marshes of Mount Pleasant and playing on the beaches of the Isle of Palms. Always one to enjoy the outdoors, he loved fishing, surfing, fencing, swim team and participated in all of the other sports the area recreation departments offered. As an adult, his hobbies include playing guitar, singing karaoke, cooking and bowling. He attended school at Whitesides Elementary, Laing Middle, Wando High and College of Charleston, where he majored in marketing and business.
Like so many in Charleston, he worked every position in the food and beverage industry before following his family into the political field, working on local, state and national campaigns. Some of you may recall his grandfather, Salvador Sottile, was one of the early mayors of the Isle of Palms, as was his cousin, Mike Sottile. His father, Nick Sottile, served as the city’s legal counsel for over a decade.
Stephen watched his parents struggle to navigate Medicare and its numerous supplements and Advantage plans, despite both having advanced degrees. He then noticed his other family members and friends had difficulty finding the right Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan and regularly choose to go uninsured instead of traversing the often-confusing website.
