Some musicians spend years trying to find their sound, but for Louie D. it seemed to arrive the moment he first picked up a saxophone. Now a familiar face on stages across the Lowcountry, he has spent decades building a life around music.
Originally from New York, he discovered the saxophone at just 10 years old, and it didn’t take long for people around him to notice that he had a rare gift. A local musician named Jessie Scales took an interest in the young player and became an early mentor, even helping him get his first instrument, a Bundy tenor sax. Louie D. developed quickly under that guidance, playing with a confidence far beyond his years. At home, his biggest supporter was his mother. Often sitting nearby to listen as he played, she was certain that her son was meant to do something special with that saxophone.
Music followed Louie D. into nearly every stage of his life, even when his path took him in another direction as an engineman in the Navy. Life at sea brought its own rhythm, but the connection to music never disappeared. During long stretches on the water, he spent hours listening to jazz, absorbing the styles of great saxophonists and quietly shaping the sound that would later define his own performances.
Over the years, Louie D. became a familiar presence in the local scene, playing with a range of musicians and eventually forming what would become The Louie D. Project. Though he has spent years performing across the region, one particularly memorable chapter came during the 2010s, when he joined a Dave Matthews tribute band that toured for two years. Taking on the role of LeRoi Moore, the legendary saxophonist from the original band, it gave him the chance to perform for larger audiences while honoring a musician he deeply respected. Even now, Louie D. still looks back on that time as one of the most fun periods of his career.
Today, having retired from his Navy career, he has returned to music full time. His style blends the music of great artists like Stevie Wonder, Prince and Michael Jackson. On the saxophone side, legends such as Grover Washington Jr., Michael Brecker, David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum helped influence the sound he developed over the years.
Despite decades of experience, Louie D. approaches songwriting with the same ease he had as a young musician. Many of his songs grow out of personal stories and moments from his own life. “Inspiration is never hard to find,” he said. “There are always new experiences, new memories and new ideas waiting to become music.”
When it comes to live shows, he appreciates the shared experience between musician and audience. As he put it, “Everyone loves good music and that’s all there is to it.” He continues to perform throughout the Lowcountry with the same passion that appeared when he picked up that first saxophone at 10 years old.
